A senior at Maloney High School in Meriden was unexpectedly taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during an immigration hearing held this week in Hartford, just days ahead of the school’s graduation ceremony.
The 12th grader’s detention came as a shock to the local community, especially since the hearing was related to immigration matters rather than any criminal charges. Mayor Kevin Scarpati confirmed the student’s detention but emphasized the city’s ongoing support for the family during this difficult time.
“Due to privacy concerns, we cannot disclose specific details about individual students,” said Mark Benigni, Superintendent of Meriden Public Schools. “However, we want to reassure all families that any student who fulfills the district’s graduation requirements will receive their diploma from the Meriden Board of Education.”

Interestingly, despite the student’s detention, school officials reported that ICE has not directly communicated with the district, highlighting a disconnect between immigration enforcement actions and local education authorities.
In response, Mayor Scarpati revealed that the city is working closely with the student’s family and has reached out to federal representatives to provide support and explore possible solutions.
Maloney High School’s graduation is scheduled for next Tuesday, an event that will likely carry added emotional weight for the community as they rally behind the detained student and their family.
The situation raises broader questions about the challenges faced by undocumented students nearing important milestones, and the role schools and local governments can play in advocating for vulnerable youth.

As the case develops, Meriden residents and educators alike are hopeful for a resolution that will allow the student to celebrate their achievement despite the legal uncertainties.
